K Scholar Graduate, Carley Riley, MD, Receives CCHMC Uma R. Kotagal Changemaker Award


K Scholar Program Graduate, Carley Riley, MD, MPP, MHS, associate professor, CCHMC Division of Critical Care Medicine, was recently awarded the first ever CCHMC 2024 Uma R. Kotagal Changemaker Award.


Dr. Riley's research focuses on social and environmental factors that promote optimal health and well-being for people and places with disproportionately high rates of social hardships and adverse health outcomes. She aims to identify, develop and implement effective interventions to promote health and well-being and mitigate related inequities. Dr. Riley's work is described as "values-driven, centered on those least fortunate, and innovative in creating novel methods for impact." She is also noted for her "leadership, vision and ability to build collective will and efficacy."


This award, given every two years, honors the legacy of Uma Kotagal, MBBS, MSc, a pioneer in quality improvement and child advocacy. The award is designated for a junior or mid-career faculty member who is changing the conversation and pushing the envelope in her footsteps.
