ABOUT DISSEMINATION & IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE

WHY STUDY DISSEMINATION & IMPLEMENTATION (D&I) SCIENCE?

D&I science can help bridge the gap between research and practice by:

  • Building an actionable and pragmatic knowledge base to help understand determinants of implementation and dissemination.

  • Developing strategies to accelerate and improve scale up and spread of effective innovations to prevent and control chromic disease.

  • Improving healthcare and public health practice to increase population health.

HOW DOES D&I SCIENCE RELATE TO LEARNING HEALTH SYSTEMS

Learning health systems are designed to accelerate the creation and implementation of innovations to improve patient and population outcomes by rapidly integrating internal knowledge with external evidence. D&I science is one necessary capability to enable this, but a learning health system also needs responsive and accurate data systems, incentives to support innovation a culture of learning to be successful. The Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) had identified 33 competencies for LHS researchers categorized across 7 domains. Implementation Science is one of the competency domains.

The CCHMC Learning Health Systems Model considers Implementation Science to be a foundational capability. Several steps of the model require timely dissemination of research findings and learning, identification of implementation barriers, and evidence based implementation strategies to ensure adoption and sustainability.
